DU Live: Bangladesh Society for Mathematical Society has organised a two-day International Conference on Computational and Mathematical Biology or ICCMB 2021 for short with the theme ‘Mathematical Biology in the Ambience of Dynamical Systems’ on Friday and Saturday, said a press release.

The inaugural session of the conference started at 9:00 am on Friday on the ZOOM platform with more than 100 participants from different countries across the world, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Japan, Myanmar, Australia, Canada, UK and US.

Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, chairman of Bangladesh Accreditation Council and former vice-chancellor of Jagannath University, inaugurated the conference as the chief guest.

The inaugural session was chaired by the president of BSMB Md Haider Ali Biswas while convenor of ICCMB 2021 Chandra Nath Podder gave the welcome address and BSMB secretary Muhammad Humayun Kabir gave the vote of thanks.

The chief guest Mesbahuddin Ahmed emphasized STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — to highlight mathematics as the language of science. He also strongly pointed out that interdisciplinary research is extremely important to flourish the applicability of mathematical tools and techniques in biology and medicine. To make this goal successful, mathematicians, biologists, and medical experts should work together, he also mentioned.

On the two-day long conference, there are four scientific sessions for the plenary speakers and seven scientific sessions for the contributory talks of faculty members, young researchers, and graduate students from home and abroad presented 55 papers.

The plenary speakers are Professor Suzanne Lenhart from the University of Tennessee, Professor Alan Hastings from California University, Professor Malay Banerjee from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Professor Leon Glass from McGill University, Katerina Kaouri from Cardiff University, Professor Kevin Painter from the Technical University of Turin, Professor Philip K Maini from the University of Oxford, Professor Taufiquar Khan from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Professor Simon Asher Levin from Princeton University, Professor Roderick Edwards from the University of Victoria, and Flavia Esposito from the University of Bari Aldo Moro.

The conference will open a door for Bangladeshi students and researchers to collaborate their work locally and globally. Moreover, it will create an enthusiasm for the early-career researchers so that they can engage themselves in the new era of real-life applications of Biomathematics.
