Live Correspondent: The government on Sunday decided to ban movement of motorcycles on highways across Bangladesh for one week from July 7 to prevent road accidents during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

With this, the motorcycles registered under one district will not be allowed to go to another district.

In rational and unavoidable cases, motorcyclists can go to other districts by taking permission from the police.

The government also decided not to allow ridesharing services by motorcycles outside Dhaka defying rules.

The decisions were taken in a meeting organised by the Road Transport and Highways Division at the road transport and bridges ministry’s conference room in the secretariat to take preparations for making people’s journey on roads safe and uninterrupted during Eid.

On the same day, the Cabinet Division secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam, after the Cabinet meeting, told reporters that there was no possibility to allow motorcycles on the Padma Bridge before the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

On the bridge artificial intelligent cameras, and speed guns would be installed and then decision would be taken about motorcycles, he said and added that these might not be done before Eid.
