Live Correspondent: The suspected rapist and killer of Samiya Afrin Sayma had been living on the seventh-floor of the building, just one storey above the apartment of the victim, says police. Abdul Baten, additional commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, disclosed the matter in a press briefing at DMP Media Center on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, DB police arrested Harun-or-Rashid in connection to the rape and murder of seven-year-old Samiya. Harun was arrested from Dabordanga area of Comilla district around 11:30am on Sunday. He works at a paint shop.

He said: "For the last two months, Harun had been staying at his cousin Parvez's apartment on the seventh floor of the building in Wari. “Samiya, who lived with her parents on the sixth-floor, sometimes went to Parvez’s apartment to play with his [Parvez's] daughter.”

"On the day of the incident, Harun lured Samiya to the top floor of the building when she was returning home from Parvez's apartment. He then took her to the loft room and raped her. At one stage, when the child became unconscious, he strangled her to death with a rope and left her body there."

In response to a reporter's query about the motive behind the murder, the additional commissioner said Harun probably did it to cover his tracks and prevent the victim from informing anyone about his crime.
