Live Correspondent: Allegation has been raised against a Supreme Court (SC) lawyer for beating a female staff of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in broad daylight at Pallabi in the capital’s Mirpur area.

Accused lawyer Jahirul Islam Khan Montu is former general secretary of Pallabi thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Victim Morrium Akter Taposi, a programme assistant of the BUP, sustained severe injuries to her body as she was beaten with cricket bats, stumps, iron rods and hockey sticks by Montu and his associates on Wednesday (November 13).

Morrium is currently undergoing treatment at the Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka cantonment. Family members of Morrium alleged that Montu demanded Tk 10 lakh as extortion money from her a month ago.

“On Wednesday, Montu and his associates waylaid Morrium on her way to the office as she refused to pay the extortion money.

They also assaulted her sexually. At one stage, they beat her with cricket bats, stumps, iron rods and hockey sticks as she protested the assault,” they said.

Montu and his associates escaped the place as pedestrians and local people rushed to the spot hearing the screaming of Morium. Later, she was rushed to the Kurmitola General Hospital.

On the same day, Fardina Haque Rini, younger sister of Morrium, filed a case against Montu and other perpetrators with Pallabi Police Station.

Family members of the victim also alleged that Montu-- the prime accused-- has been threatening them to withdraw the case.
