Coronavirus deaths surpass 1,700-mark in BD

Live Correspondent: The total coronavirus deaths crossed 1,700-mark in Bangladesh on Sunday after 43 fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours. Just 113 days after the government confirmed the first three detected cases, 1,738 coronavirus-infected people have so far died in the country as of Sunday Thursday, according to official data.

In a press briefing in the afternoon, Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said 43 more people died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, climbing the death toll in the country to 1,738.

Of the new deceased, 31 are men while 12 are women. Dhaka witnessed the highest causalities with 21 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Besides, 10 died in Chattogram, three each Khulna and Sylhet, two each in Rajshahi and Barishal and one each in Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions during the same day.

Nasima said 1,409 more patients recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 55,727.

The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 40.44 while the mortality rate is 1.26 percent.

The first death was recorded in the country on March 18. Besides, Prof Nasima said 3,809 new coronavirus infections were registered in the country in the last 24 hours. With the fresh ones, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country now increased to 137,787 in the country.

Prof Nasima said 18,099 samples were tested in 65 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 733,197 samples have so far been tested in the country.

In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 21.05 percent while the infection rate 18.87 against total tests carried out so far, she said.

On Saturday, Bangladesh recorded 34 deaths from coronavirus and 3,504 cases.Meanwhile, the world has reached the two grim milestones of registering 1 crore coronavirus cases and 5 lakh deaths from Covid-19 as the virus continued to raise its ugly head in different countries. 

As of 9:30am on Sunday, confirmed coronavirus cases around the world have reached 10,082,613 while the death toll from the virus soared to 501,308, according to Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 4,122,782 patients, 4,065,034 are in mild condition while 57,748 are in serious or critical condition. So far, 5,458,523 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 2,596,537 and 128,152 respectively while Brazil is in the 2nd position with 1,315,941 cases and 57,103 deaths.
