Live Correspondent: Terming the ‘bureaucracy’ as a good thing, Planning Minister MA Mannan on Tuesday said the Soviet Union, China, the Pharaohs and the Caliphs could not find an alternative to the bureaucracy.

Mannan says, “Bureaucracy is not bad, it is good. No alternative to bureaucracy has yet emerged in any country. No one could find out. The Soviets could not get out. The Chinese could not get out either. Not even Pharaoh could. We also have this bureaucracy.”

He made the comment after the meeting of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at noon. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the meeting from Ganobhaban, while ministers and officials concerned attended it from the NEC conference room.

Responding to a question from reporters, MA Mannan said, “I myself was once a minor bureaucrat. I am still a big bureaucrat in my mind. The best time of my life was spent in bureaucracy. So this project of bureaucracy has been passed today.”

Bangladesh Public Administration Training Center (BPATC) in Savar, which is a training center for bureaucrats, will be modernized, reformed and expanded, added the minister.

The ECNEC meeting approved a total of 10 projects involving the overall estimated cost of Tk 6,651.34 crore, said Planning Minister.
