Live Correspondent: University Grants Commission has expressed concern over harassment of students on the campuses of some public universities. “UGC is observing with anxiety that students are being victims of harassment in different ways in some public universities of the country,

even if, untoward incidents like killing are also taking place in these higher educational institutions,” it said in a statement today.

UGC’s concern came against the backdrop of the ruthless killing of Buet student Abrar Fahad. Abrar, a second-year student of Buet’s electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League leaders at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall between 7:00pm Sunday and 2:30am on October 7.

Such problematic occurrences are pushing the students’ lives to uncertainty and making the country unstable side by side with destroying the overall environment of the university campus. Under this situation, UGC urged the university administration to take immediate and effective steps for resolving the prevailing crisis, the statement said.

It also urged the university administration to make the concerned provost, assistant provost or house tutors alert for maintaining the security of the students at every hall and university.

The Commission called upon the university authority to continue publicity against ragging and drug alongside ensuring security.
