DU Live: Dhaka University (DU) authorities began distributing hand sanitizers, prepared by Biomedical Research Centre and DU Pharmacy Faculty, among the university’s students and teachers to tackle coronavirus outbreak.

The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university Professor Dr Akhtaruzzaman today inaugurated the distribution process at a function held at the lecture theater of Pharmacy faculty on Monday.

On the day, they distributed two hundred bottles among the teachers and one hundred among the students along with giving each to six hall provosts one litter hand sanitizer for the students, who are staying at the ‘Gonoroom’ (mass room) of dormitories.

Dr Akhtaruzzaman appreciated the initiative and assured that he will provide all out cooperation for the project. President of Dhaka University Teachers Association ASM Maksud Kamal, General Secretary Dr Nizamul Hoqoe Bhuiyan, Professor emeritus AK Azad Chowdhury and Assistant General Secretary (AGS) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Saddam Hussein, among others, were present on the occasion, with Dean of Pharmacy Faculty Dr SM Abdur Rahman in the chair.

The students and teachers of Pharmacy faculty led by Dean of Pharmacy Faculty Dr SM Abdur Rahman prepared 600 bottles of hand sanitizers at the laboratory of Biotechnology Research Centre of DU and they will continue the production as per the university’s demand.

“We have prepared the hand sanitizers under our own funding. However, now some university teachers and other humanitarian people, after being informed by social media, are providing financial support for the project deliberately. As per their interest, we can take an initiative to make it another dimension,” said Dr Abdul Muhit of DU Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology Department.

“Initially, the sanitizers are being distributed among the teachers, students and officials of the university. However, we have planned to distribute it to other people based on the quantity of production,” said Dr Muhit. In a day, they can produce 200-300 bottles with production cost of each 100 milliliter bottle at Taka 100 while the market price is nearly Taka 200, he added.
