Cumilla Live: Police have arrested 43 people on charges of inciting attacks and vandalizing several Hindu temples in Cumilla, said Anwar Hossain, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Chattogram Range of police. "So far, 43 people including the chief suspect Fayez Ahmed have been arrested in connection with the incident. Cases will be filed for each incident that happened in Cumilla city and perpetrators will be brought to justice," he said.
DIG Anwar Hossain said investigators are going through security camera footage to identify those behind the incidents and the perpetrators will be brought to justice. He said police are on alert in those areas outside Cumilla that also saw violence and cases will be prepared over each incident.
The incident was part of a plan to incite tensions, he said after visiting the Cumilla temple, which became the center of a social media storm on Wednesday for allegedly besmirching the Holy Quran.
Police have detained Fayez Uddin, the person who initially posted the video on social media, and are questioning him for information, which will be cross-checked.
Additional security measures have been taken to avert any untoward incident, he said before adding, "The law and order situation in the area is calm."
Cumilla district administration has formed a three-member committee regarding the incident at a roadside puja mandap built on the north bank of Nanua Dighi in Cumilla city.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in 22 districts across the country to maintain the law and order situation amid Durga Puja.
BGB director Lt Col Fayzur Rahman said the troops have deployed some districts of the country on Thursday morning as per the demand of district administration and the direction of the Home Ministry for Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Bangalee Hindu community.
The BGB members are patrolling the temples and the surrounding areas with other law enforcement agencies amid tensions over alleged blasphemy in Cumilla.
The 22 districts include Cumilla, Narsingdi, and Munshiganj. "The BGB will be deployed in other districts, including the capital if needed," Lt Col Fayzur Rahman said.
