Probe body formed to investigate PUST's IP theft incident

PUST Live: The authorities of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) have formed a three-member committee against two teachers in connection with intellectual property theft (IP theft). The accused teachers are Awal Kabir, Assistant Professor of Department of Social Work, and Yahiya Bepari, Assistant Professor of Department of Economics.

Rakib Chowdhury and Mahbub Sarkar,  Professors at the Faculty of Education, Monas University, Australia, have accused the two teachers of plagiarism in a research article published in an education journal in the United States.

Farooq Hossain Chowdhury, deputy director of public relation office of the university, confirmed the matter on Sunday.

Computer Science and Engineering Department's Professor Mohammad Shahdat Hossain convened the committee. The other members of the probe body are Professor Mohammad Helal Uddin of Applied and Environmental Chemistry, Chattogram University, and Professor M Shamim Kaiser of Department of Information Technology, Jahangirnagar University.

Farooq Hossain said, "Professors Rakib Chowdhury and Mahbub Sarkar made an allegation against the two teachers of plagiarism. An inquiry committee has been formed at a meeting of the Academic Council which has been asked to submit a report within the next 15 working days.
 
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to buy anti-plagiarism software 'Tarnitin' to prevent theft in research.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Pleasureism Checker Web Service Purchase Committee held at the Virtual Platform on May 16, Farooq Hossain said.
