RU Live: Those who have appointed illegally at Rajshahi University (RU) by the former vice-chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan have started showing their power. At around 8:30 am on Saturday, they locked the administrative building and the main gate of VC’s residence and took the position in front of the two places to show their strength.

According to the source, a regular meeting of the finance committee was scheduled to be held at the administration building at 10 am. Sensing this beforehand, they gathered together on the campus and locked the administration building in the morning and sat on guard in front of the building forcing the authorities to cancel the meeting.

A meeting of the university syndicate committee is also scheduled for June 22.

According to RU administration sources, about 30 of the illegally recruited employees went to the administration building amid rain at around 8.30 am and locked two large locks in the building. At the same time, another group went and locked the main gate of the VC’s residence.

Although the finance committee was supposed to hold a regular meeting, the members of the committee could not enter as the administration building was locked.

RU acting vice-chancellor Professor Ananda Kumar Saha said, "” We have already received information that illegally recruited employees will enter into the campus and try to prevent the meeting of the finance committee from taking place. The police were informed earlier. The ministry will be informed about this on Saturday.”

Some of the illegally appointed employees said on condition of anonymity, “We have received news that the syndicate meeting will be held on June 22 after the meeting of the finance committee. The next syndicate meeting will decide to cancel all our appointments. That is why we have locked the administration building.”

“The VC said he would look into the matter of our appointment. We are coming to the campus in that hope.”

On May 5, former vice-chancellor Abdus Sobhan appointed 137 teachers and staffers on his last day in office. The Education Ministry termed the recruitments illegal and formed a probe committee on that day.
