Two 'Proloy gang' members arrested over assaulting DU student

DU Live: Police arrested two members of Dhaka University based "Proloy gang", whose members allegedly assaulted a fellow student inside the campus on Saturday night. The arrested are Naimur Rahman Durjoy of Anthropology Department and Foysal Ahmed Sakib of International Business Department--- are the students of 2020-21 academic session.

According to witnesses, a speeding car splashed muddy water on Zubaer while he was talking to his friends near the faculty building on Saturday evening.

This prompted Zubaer and his friends to chase down the car near Tin Netar Mazar area for an explanation, initiating a quarrel with those inside the car, they said.

Victim Zubaer said about an hour later, he was asked to come to Kabi Jasimuddin Hall area over phone. When he reached there, a group of around 15 students attacked him with sticks and cricket stumps. Some of them whipped him with their leather belts.

Later, Sadia Afroz Khan, mother of victim Zubaer Ibne Humayun, lodged a complaint with Shahabag Police Station against 24 students of the university.

Shahabag Police Station officer-in-charge Noor Mohammad said following a complaint filed by the victim's mother the two students were arrested on Sunday night and then, they were sent to court.

According to locals, the accused belong to a group formed by some DU students of 2020-21 academic session named 'Proloy'. Its members are allegedly involved drug abuse, extortion and assaulting outsiders on the campus specially at the Suhrawardy Udyan and Shaheed Minar area at night.’
