Sports fraternity celebrates Sheikh Russel’s 58th birthday

Live Correspondent: The country’s sports fraternity on Monday celebrated the 58th birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Born on October 18 in 1964, Sheikh Russel was brutally killed along with most of his family members of Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975.

The Cabinet Division this year declared October 18 as Sheikh Russel Day. Top-tier sporting club Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited observed this day. Club’s director in charge Ismat Jamil Akhond and other officials paid tribute to Sheikh Russel by placing floral wreaths at Banani graveyard in the capital. 

Later the club arranged a doa mahfil and Milad for eternal peace for the departed soul of Russel at Banani graveyard mosque.

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited, the club named after him, also organised a children’s art competition at its premises in the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area was full of attentive child painters titled Shaheed Sheikh Russel Shishu Chitrangkan Protijogita marking his birthday.

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Chairman and Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, along with three children, cut the birthday cake of Sheikh Russel. Later he distributed prizes among the winners of the competition.

Bangladesh Football Federation also arranged a cake-cutting programme and a friendly football match at the artificial turf in its premises in Motijheel.

BFF senior vice-president Abdus Salam Murshedy, MP, and other executive committee members were present there. Bangladesh Shooting Sports Federation hosted the 2nd Sheikh Russel Air Gun Championship (Online) to mark this day. A total of 73 shooters, from 9 countries, took part in four events of this day-long competition.

Rabbi Hossain Munna from Bangladesh clinched a gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle, Bezrukova Yelizaveta from Kazakhstan earned a gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle, Makhyov Yaroslav from Kazakhstan won a gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol and Korostylova Yulia from Ukraine earned a gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol.

The top three shooters from each event were awarded USD 300, USD 200 and USD 100 respectively.

Elsewhere, Bangladesh Chess Federation is going to arrange Sheikh Russel International Grandmaster Chess Tournament on Monday at the Hotel Purbani International in the capital.
