US invites applications form Bangladeshi undergraduate students for Global UGRAD prog

Live Correspondent: The US Embassy in Dhaka has announced applications for the 2023-2024 Global Undergraduate Exchange (UGRAD) Programme, which provides Bangladeshi students with scholarships to study at US higher education institutions for one semester during the academic year. 

This program provides fully funded scholarships for outstanding Bangladeshi undergraduate students to attend a US college/university for one academic semester.  

Applications are due on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 11.59 p.m. (Bangladesh Standard Time). 

This international educational exchange program provides participants with an opportunity to experience the US higher education system, learn more about American culture and values, and participate in community service projects.  

Over the last 17 years, 79 Bangladeshi students participated in the program, providing future leaders with an opportunity to enhance their academic knowledge and develop their professional skills.  Prominent Bangladeshi Global UGRAD alumni include Mahmuda Yasmin Kona who studied at Troy University in Alabama during the Fall 2021 semester.  

After returning to Bangladesh, Mahmuda completed her studies at her home institution, the Bangladesh University of Professionals.  

She is passionate about climate issues and was selected to participate in a regional conference bringing together young climate change activists from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka held in September 2022.  Since the conference, she has been conducting research on ecosystem conservation. 

Program Components: 

Academics:  Students will be enrolled in full-time, non-degree, undergraduate coursework chosen from their host institution’s existing curriculum for one academic semester.  Participants will be required to take one, three-credit American studies course to enhance their understanding of the United States. 

•    Service Learning: Students will participate in local community service activities to develop their leadership skills.  

•    Internships: Students will gain hands-on professional experience by completing prestigious internships at renowned U.S.-based organizations, businesses, and companies.  

•   Cultural Exchange:  Students will learn about American culture and society in addition to serving as a youth ambassadors of Bangladesh through activities, such as cultural exhibitions and performances.  

•   Leadership:  Students will enhance their leadership skills by participating in training and workshops focused on self-reflection, goal setting, and other topics aimed at providing them with critical tools to become successful leaders in their professions and communities.
