Live Correspondent: The United States recorded 1,514 deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic over the latest 24 hours, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University as of 8:30pm Sunday, 00:30GMT Monday.

The number of fatalities was lower than the previous day’s toll of 1,920. The outbreak has now claimed the lives of at least 22,020 people in the US, the most of any country.

The US also leads the world by far in the number of confirmed infections, with 555,313 by the Baltimore-based university’s count. Meanwhile, both France and Italy reported lower coronavirus daily death toll on Sunday.

France reported a drop in COVID-19 deaths on the previous 24 hours, with the total toll from the coronavirus epidemic in the country now 14,393, the health ministry said. It said that there were 315 deaths in hospital over the last day, compared with 345 the day earlier. The total toll includes those who have died in nursing homes.

France had on April 6 recorded 605 deaths in hospitals, its highest daily number so far. For the fourth consecutive day in a row, the number of patients in intensive care fell with 35 fewer patients, making a total of 6,845 people needing such treatment.

The health ministry reaffirmed that a ‘plateau’ appeared to have been reached but warned the situation remained serious despite the slightly improving data.

‘We must stay vigilant as the hospital and intensive care services are taking in very many patients,’ it said.France has been in lockdown since March 17 in a bid to slow the spread of the epidemic, with only essential trips allowed.

French president Emmanuel Macron is due on Monday to address the nation for a third time during the crisis and is expected to announce that the lockdown will be extended beyond its current April 15 expiration date.

Macron will have to steer a careful course amid the tentative signs of improvement, telling people they must still stay at home while giving indications about how the confinement measures might be relaxed.

Meanwhile, Italy on Sunday reported its lowest coronavirus death toll in more than three weeks, confirming trends showing that the COVID-19 outbreak in Europe’s worst-hit nation had peaked.

The 431 new deaths reported by the civil protection service were the lowest since March 19. Italy’s death total now stands at 19,899, officially second behind the United States. The number of people currently showing COVID-19 symptoms is still growing, officially rising to 102,253, but the number of people receiving emergency care is dropping, the data showed.

The number of people in non-critical hospital care is also down.‘The pressure on our hospitals continues to ease,’ civil protection service chief Angelo Borrelli told reporters.
