DU student 'tortured to death' at in-laws, husband held

 

Deceased Elma Chowdhury Meghla, a final year student of the Department of Dance, married Canada expatriate Iftekhar Abedin about a year ago.

Police, however, detained Iftekhar, who came to Dhaka from Canada on Sunday (December 12).

Citing injury marks on Meghla's hands and legs, relatives alleged she had been tortured to death.

Banani Police Station OC Nure Azam Miah said, "Elma Chowdhury was taken to United Hospital around 4pm on Tuesday. She succumbed to her injuries within an hour. Her body bore several injury marks."

"The financial condition of Elma's family is not good. She married Iftekhar in short introduction on a promise to take care of her family. But after marriage, her in-laws did not give permission to contact with her family," said her cousin Rehana Sultana.
