Int’l workshop on mathematics begins at Dhaka University today

Live Correspondent: A scientific research school, titled Mathematical Epidemiology/Biology, will begin at the Department of Mathematics of Dhaka University today. CIMPA, a nonprofit organisation working to promote mathematical research in developing countries, has organised the programme. France, Switzerland, Spain and Norway formed the organisation in 1978.

About 50 local and foreign applicants from different universities of Bangladesh and 15 researchers and teachers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Philippines, Tunisia, Ghana and Senegal were selected to participate in the school.

The workshop will run under the supervision of seven international mathematics experts from the USA, Canada, France, Spain and Italy.

The inaugural programme will begin at 3:00 pm at AF Mojibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban of Dhaka University. The programme will be chaired by Department of Mathematics chairman professor Md Shahidul Islam.

Education Minister Dipu Moni will be present as chief guest and Dhaka University pro-vice-chancellor (education) ASM Maksud Kamal, France embassy chargé d’affaires Guillaume Audren de Kerdrel and AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation trustee Khushi Kabir will be present as special guests.

The closing ceremony of the scientific school will be held at 3:30 pm on May 20 with the distribution of certificates and crests.

Ambassador of Spain Francisco de Asis Benitez Salas, DU vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman, science faculty dean Md Abdus Samad and AF Mujibur Rahman foundation trustee professor Parveen Hasan will be present at the closing ceremony.

DU mathematics professor Chandranath Podder and professor Jorge Mozo Fernández from Spain will be coordinators of the research school. AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation, the International Mathematical Union and others are providing financial support to make the event a success.

Campuslive24.com, ATN News, daily Samakal and daily New Age will be the media partners of the school. The workshop will begin at 8:00 am and will continue till 5:00 pm every day.
