CU Live: Three students, who were involved in the sexual assault of a female student at the Chittagong University (CU) campus, will be expelled for life by Sunday, said CU vice-chancellor Prof Shirin Akter.

She made the announcement at an annual senate meeting of the university held at 1:45 pm on Saturday.

Prof Shirin Akter said, "It's a matter of great shame that three, out of four arrested students, involved in the sexual assault of a female student are students of Chittagong University. They will be expelled by tomorrow (Sunday). Even, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inquired about the incident. She has sent a special law enforcement agency. It's a matter of utter shame for the university."

"Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-7 arrested four accused from Hathazari and Raozan Upazilas in Chattogram conducting raids on Friday night. Of them, three are the students of CU," said RAB-7 Commander Lt Col M.A. Yusuf. He, however, did not disclose the names of the accused at that time.

But, Lt Col Yusuf said the 'mastermind' of the incident was among the arrested persons.

However, sources said the three arrested accused are the followers of CU BCL president Rezaul Huque Rubel. Two of the four arrested persons are BCL activists. The rest two are known as the followers of the CU BCL president.

On Sunday (July 17) night, five youths sexually assaulted a female student taking her to Botanical Garden forcibly when she was returning to Pritilata Hall along with her friend. They also tried to rape her. The youths also videoed the incident and threatened the girls to make it viral.

On the following day, the victim went to the university administration to lodge a complaint but failed to do it because of the interception of CU BCL president Rezaul Huque Rubel.

Later, the girl lodged a case with Hathazari Police Station. The four were arrested following the filing of the case. Of them, two are BCL activists and the rest two are followers of the Chattogram University BCL president.

The arrested are Azim, 23, a second-year History department student of CU, Noor Hossain Sharon, 22, and Masud Rana, 22, a student of Hathazari Government College, and Nurul Absar Babu, 23.
