Two-day special lecture held at DU's IR department

DU Live: A two-day special lecture ended at Dhaka University's Department of International Relations on Tuesday. The special lecture was held according to the agreement signed between the Department of International Relations of Dhaka University and the University of Beira Interior, Portugal under the Erasmus + International Credit Mobility Program.

UBI's Department of Arts Professor Dr. Catarina Moura delivered the special lectures at the Department of International Relations of Dhaka University.

The topics of her lectures delivered on July 24 and July 26 were "Design, Territory, and Citizenship: The discursive experience of digital fluidity in a world of obstacles, walls, and borders" and "Designing 'The Other as a Feeding Mechanism of Globalocalized Tension: Appreciation, appropriation, other isms, and how inclusivity informs sustainability" respectively.

In a welcome speech, the Chairman of DU's Department of International Relations Prof Mohammad Ruhul Amin said that academic collaboration between UBI and DU's IR Department has been going on since 2018.

"This agreement was signed with the sincerity and efforts of the teachers of  Department of International Relations of Dhaka University and the cooperation of Dhaka University authorities especially the Honorable Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Md Akhtaruzzaman and Treasurer Prof Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed," he said.

He also thanked the Vice Rector and Institutional Coordinator of UBI Dr. Joao Caravilhas and Erasmus Mobility Coordinator of UBI Joanna Fernandes.

In her lectures,  Prof Dr. Catarina Moura discussed design theory and explained its political and ethical implications in the global arena.

She analyzed the differences between symbol, design, and design theory and governance, exploitation, and hegemony in international relations by applying design theory.

She also discussed how border walls between nation-states are driving the world's human societies into divisions and how the flow of refugees is weighing the world down.

She explained how people and products made by people can move freely in the world through design theory.

She also discussed how to reassess the contours of the discriminatory world system and gave directions to move towards a sustainable and secure future by eliminating cultural disparities and creating an inclusive world.

In addition, she explained colonialism, occupation, etc. through design theory and advised to move towards a safe, integrated and permanent world system after being freed from occupation.

The teachers and students of the International Relations Department were present during these two-day special lectures.

Among others, Professor Dr. Ehsanul Haque, Professor Dr. Lailufar Yasmin, Professor Dr. Syeda Rozana Rashid, Professor Dr. Md Abdul Mannan, and Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan of DU's Department of International Relations were present there.
