BUET Live: Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) students have expressed deep concern saying that ill attempts are being made by a vested quarter to divert the general students' programme made in protest against a discussion under the banner of "Former Leaders of Chhatra League" at BUET.

"Our protest at the BUET campus on Saturday was not against the National Mourning Day programmes on the BUET campus in any way. The general students of BUET irrespective of religion, colour and political identity hold the ideals of Bangabandhu. Being imbued with his ideals, we the general student are ready to build a prosperous 'Sonar Bangla."

The general students stated it while addressing a press conference held at BUET Cafeteria premises early Sunday (August 14) afternoon.

The students organised the press conference in the wake of the situation which has arisen following Saturday's programmes.

A group of former leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) came under widespread protest from general students while holding a meeting at BUET where politics was banned following the killing of Abrar Fahad.

In their written statement, the general students under the banner "BUET's general students imbued with the ideals of Bangabandhu" said, "Attempts are being made to divert our programmes on different platforms including social media. This propaganda has made us worried and shocked."

"We firmly believe that Bangabandhu is universal. It is not necessary to have a political party or organisation to hold his spirit in mind. Since the ban of the activities of political organisations on the BUET campus, general students have been holding the programmes of different national days on their own," a student said, expressing anonymity.

It was stated in the statement that despite the ban on political activities at BUET campus, general students informed the Director, of Student Welfare about witnessing a banner of political student organisation and assembled at the central auditorium premises.

The students said, "We the general students assembled and lodged protests being worried so that our safe campus did not turn into a reign of terror by the student politics of tailism."

It was also stated at the press conference that a memorial meeting would be organised in observance of the 'National Mourning Day' at BUET Cafeteria at 5:00 pm on Monday. Besides, a written prayer has been submitted to the BUET Vice-Chancellor seeking his permission to hold doa and Milad mahfil at BUET Central Mosque.

All the persons employed at BUET administrative and academic responsibilities, BUET students, former students, and freedom fighters have been invited at the National Mourning Day's programmes.
