IU students stage demo demanding punishment to Urmi killers

IU Live: Folklore department teachers and students of the Islamic University (IU), Kushtia staged a demonstration on the campus seeking exemplary punishment for the killers of the meritorious student Nishat Tasnim Urmi on Saturday morning.
They also formed a human chain in front of the main entrance of the university in this regard at 12 PM. Protesters demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and a speedy trial of the culprits.
Addressing the demonstration, Assistant Professor Dr. Abu Shibli Chowdhury said, "We have come to know that the student's in-laws are trying to cover up the planned murder as suicide because they are influential. We are demanding the execution of the killers subject to a fair investigation.”
On Thursday night, Nishat Tasnim Urmi, 23, an Islamic University student, was found dead at her in-law's house in the Kathuli Mor area of Gangni Upazila in Meherpur.
Neighbors found Tasnim’s body hanging from the ceiling of her room around 10:00 pm. Later, she was taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Her family members alleged that she was killed by her in-laws. Police arrested her husband Ashrafuzzaman Prince and father-in-law Saiful Islam Hashem soon after the victim's father Golam Kibria filed a murder case in connection with the incident.
