DU Live: A student of Dhaka University (DU) started a fast-unto-death protesting 'the uncooperative behavior of the university Vice-chancellor Prof Dr. Md Akhtaruzzaman and to press home an eight-point demand including stopping harassment of students by officials at the university's administrative building.

Hasnat Abdullah, a master’s student in the university's English Department started the hunger strike after meeting the Vice-Chancellor at 11:45 am as he did not get any assurance of fulfilling the demands and taking necessary steps to solve the sufferings of students at the administrative building.

Hasnat said he went to meet the VC with the paper received from the mass signature program of the students and the findings of the survey conducted on students regarding the quality of service at the administrative building.

"When I talked about the demands to solve the problems at the administrative building, he (VC sir) said that I'm going too far and asked me to do whatever I want," said Hasnat adding, "VC sir showed noncooperation."

Protesting the Vice-Chancellor's poor response, Hasnat announced the hunger strike and said he will continue the hunger strike till his demands are met.

On August 30, Hasnat stood in front of the administrative building with eight-point demands to resolve the administrative complications of various sections of the university and handed over a memorandum to the VC with a 10-day ultimatum.

As the demands were not met, he again started a sit-in program on September 18 in front of the registrar building.

His demands include forming a complaint cell for ensuring accountability of administrative officials and stopping harassment of students, digitalization of all administrative activities within a short time and setting up CCTV cameras in all offices for ensuring safety.
