NU Live: The National University, the largest seat of higher education in the country, celebrated the Basanta, the Pahela Falgun, the first day of spring and eleventh month in the Bengali calendar, on Tuesday. For the first time, the NU authorities arranged programmes to observe the day.

Songs, dance and recitation of poetry included the Basanta celebration on the premises of Tejgaon College under the National University in this regard.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the programme which was presided over by NU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mashiur Rahman. Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni graced the occasion as the chief guest.

“Our new generation needs to be more creative in practising sound cultural heritage. The hues of positive culture will have to be spread among the students across the country,” said Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

Dr Dipu Moni spoke of the need for nourishing Bengali culture which is well equipped with songs and poetries based on the characteristics of all seasons.

Reciting poetry, she said “Our forward journey is ensured by having a leader like Sheikh Hasina. The colour of Basanta will resist all darkness. We are Bengalis, the victorious nation. We must uproot all evil force and build Sonar Bangla as envisaged by Bangabandhu.”

The VC said Basanta ushers in everything good, positive and euphoric. Bangabandhu’s little children configured a Bangladesh which he sketched during imprisonment. The freedom fighters and persecuted women dreamed about a country full of greeneries, possibilities and creativities.

Pointing to the students, he said “All of my children (pupils) are expected to march forward being imbued with patriotism. Let us take oath today to serve the society and country alongside building a personal career.”
