Live Correspondent: Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, has expelled a leader and four activists of the Islamic University unit of BCL who were found involved in torturing and humiliating a fresher at a hall at the university.

Those expelled from the party are IU BCL vice-president Sanjida Chowdhury Antara, activists Tabassum Islam, Israt Jahan Mim, Halima Khatun Urmi and Moabia Jahan.

A press release, signed by BCL president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, was issued in this regard on Wednesday afternoon.

Except for the expelled Sanjida Chowdhury Antara, four others are the students of the 2020-2021 academic year.

Chhatra League made the decision against them for violating rules and regulations, breaching discipline and tarnishing the organisation's image, said the press release.

They took the decision two days after the probe body formed by the Islamic University unit BCL sent its investigation report to them through email.

Saddam Hossain said they expelled the five activists from the organisation for violating the party's rules and regulations.

On February 12 night, Fulpori Khatun, a first-year student of the Finance and Banking department, was tortured and intimidated by Antara and her associates at Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall on the university campus in Kushtia.

Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall administration on Monday expelled the accused from the hall for their involvement in the incident.

Meanwhile, the High Court on Wednesday ordered the authorities of the Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia to expel the accused five leaders and activists of BCL.

The HC passed the order against the five BCL activists who were found involved in torturing and undressing a first-year student at Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall of the university.

At the same time, HC directed the authorities concerned to transfer Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall provost Shamsul Alam. An HC bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Raziq Al Jalil issued the directives on Wednesday.

In its order, the HC further asked the authorities concerned to allocate seats to the victimised student at any residential hall within the next three days. The student would be able to choose any seat as per her wish.

Besides, five expelled students would not be able to take part in academic activities and cannot stay on campus.
