Sports Live: Bangladesh achieved the rare feat of winning a main phase match in the ICC T20 World Cup when they beat the Netherlands by nine runs in their opening Group 2 Super 12 match at Bellerive Oval on Monday.

The win was orchestrated through a brilliant pace bowling display by the Bangladesh seamers, who enabled Bangladesh to defend a mere target of 145 runs in cold shivering weather in Hobart.

Taskin Ahmed led the bowling attack from the front as he picked up 4-25 while Hasan Mahmud (2-15) and Mustafizur Rahman (0-20) also provided handy contributions in their allotted four overs that guided the Tigers to earn their first main round win in the T20 World Cup after 2007.

The pace trio bowled a total of 46 dot balls in their 12 overs and were gone for only 60 runs with a combined economy of just five that rescued Bangladesh from conceding an embarrassment in the hands of the Dutch.

The recent form of Bangladesh in this format didn’t allow anyone to have a belief that the Tigers would easily go past the Dutch hurdle after the latter joined them in the group from the qualifying phase.

When Bangladesh was restricted to a total of 144-8 in their innings, many had thought the Tigers would extend their winless drought to 24 matches in the main event.

However, some disciplined bowling performances by the seamers just saved their faces for the time being and now they will be heading towards Sydney in the quest of achieving another victory against a tougher opposition South Africa.

During an eventful press conference in Hobart where Taskin looked much of a relieved person after the victory had come up with some mature words that should make anyone optimistic regarding the team.

Despite achieving the much-needed victory, the 27-year-old was speaking about improvement in their pace attack, not just one time but also on quite a few occasions.

“We have figured out that the new ball swings more in Australia than the sub-continent. All the bowlers worked really hard since New Zealand, so we just tried to execute our basics. We are improving as a bowling unit. We are all doing pretty well. Our main focus is to keep improving,” Taskin said.

“Everyone is improving in the fast bowling unit. We dream of becoming a world-class bowling unit. We are positive about it, the process is working well. Conditions differ in every game, so we have to adjust to it.

“There will be days when I will get wickets, then there will be days when I don’t get wickets. I might leak more runs. Or sometimes I will win the game for the team. It is hard to predict performances, but we all have the hunger to improve, so that’s the most positive thing.

“Despite so much talk around, our team unity is intact. We are helping each other,” he said, adding that the tired practice introduced by T20 technical consultant Sridharan Sriram helped them a lot to be more consistent with yorkers.

“The tire practice was introduced to us by our head coach (Sriram). It helps us be more consistent for yorkers and wide yorkers. We don’t have a great record in the death overs, but it is improving. We have to be more consistent,” he said.

The youngest member of the trio Hasan also shared his excitement to be part of the pace attack alongside Taskin and Mustafizur.

“I’m really happy to bowl with Taskin Bhai and Mustafizur Bhai. We will keep trying to maintain the unit and want to give Bangladesh a lot (in the future),” Hasan said during a Mixed Zone interaction with the journalists covering the match.
