Ansar retain Women’s Handball title

Sports Live: Bangladesh Ansar and VDP retained the National Women’s Handball title after beating Panchagarh District Sports Association by 30-19 goals in the final of the 34th edition, jointly organised by Bangladesh Handball Federation and Jashore District Sports Association and sponsored by EXIM Bank Ltd at the Shamsul Huda Stadium in Jashore on Monday.

In the day’s third-place decider, Police Handball Club defeated Madaripur DSA by 20-5 goals at the same venue. 

Ansar earlier beat the same opponents Panchagarh DSA in the final of the previous 33rd edition held in Narail in 2021. Even, they also beat Police in the 9th Bangladesh Games held in the same year in 2021. 

The service team clinched this top-tier domestic title a total of 22 times and 6 times in a row since their first title in 1984.   

They maintained an unbeaten run after beating Habiganj by 35-1 goals, Naogaon by 21-7, Madaripur by 42-5, Faridpur by 28-2 and Jamalpur by 41-10 in their group matches and crushed Police by 27-3 goals in the semifinals on their way to the final.

Ansar player Alpana Akhter was adjudged the best player of the competition. 

“I have been facing many social obstacles, but now I think I’ve given my reply. I’ve been playing for Ansar and playing for the national team. My dream is to send my team and country to the top position in this sport,” said Alpana after the match. 

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharjee, MP distributed prizes among the winners as the chief guest.   

BHF General Secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, Jashore Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Rafiqul Hasan, Jashore DSA General Secretary Yacoob Kabir and other distinguished personalities were also present on the occasion.
