Live Corresondent: New Super Market's Shop Owners Association president has alleged that fire had originated during the demolition of a steel-made foot-over bridge by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Md Shahidullah, president of the New Super Market's Shop Owners Association, alleged that DSCC's workers were working for demolition of the bridge at 3:00am on Saturday (April 15).

They didn't pay heed to the electricity lines there. The fire originated when they put bulldozer on the electricity lines. This undesirable situation happened due to their negligence.

The Fire Service learnt about the fire at 5:40am. Then as many as 31 units of Fire Service rushed to the spot and tried to bring the inferno under control. The fire came under control after three and a half hours.

The fire at New Supermarket was brought under control around 9:10am. A total of 31 firefighting units and teams of Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force worked to douse the fire.

Twelve Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) units were also deployed on the spot apart from police and RAB. At least 19 people fell sick from the heavy smoke while fire fighters were trying to douse the blaze that broke out at Dhaka’s New Supermarket — next to New Market — early today.

Of them, 13 are firefighters, one fire service officer, two volunteers, two Ansar members and one Navy sergeant. They have been admitted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
