Buet bans political activities on campus

Live Correspondent: Buet Vice Chancellor Prof Saiful Islam today declared ban on political activities of all organisations on the university campus following the brutal murder of its 2nd year student Abrar Fahad.“I am, based on my own power, announcing ban on political activities of all organisations in the university,” Prof Saiful Islam came up with the announcement while holding a meeting with the representatives of the agitating students this evening.

At the same time, the VC also announced suspension of 19 students who have been shown accused in the murder case.Apologizing for his delay in taking quick action, VC Saiful Islam said the family members of Abrar will be given compensation and the Buet authority will bear the expenditure of the case lodged in connection with the murder.      

The university authority will also write to the government seeking its help to end the trial quickly, he said assuring the student representatives to stop ragging on the university campus.Huge students of Buet join a meeting with their Vice Chancellor Prof Saiful Islam held a meeting at the university auditorium 

The Buet VC held the meeting with protesting students to discuss their demands submitted following the death of their fellow Abrar Fahad. The meeting was started at the auditorium of the Buet around 5:30pm in presence of media and ended around 8:00pm.

The students and the VC of the university yesterday agreed to sit together to put an end to the chaotic situation on the campus over Abrar death.The meeting was fixed after the personal secretary of the VC reached out to the protesters yesterday and convinced them for the meeting.

Yesterday, the protesting students gave time to the VC to clear his stance about their demands by 2:00pm today. Otherwise, they would lock down all buildings on campus, the students threaten.

Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of Buet, died after he was brutally beaten allegedly by some Chhatra League men at dormitory of the university between 7:00pm Sunday and 2:30am on Monday, October 7, 2019.The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar.

Law enforcers suspect, Abrar was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some recent deals with India.Later, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 with the Chawkbazar Police Station.

WHAT ARE THE DEMANDS?

Agitating students placed a fresh 10-point demand on Wednesday, which included capital punishment to the killers, expulsion of all the accused from the university, put an end to all sorts of ragging in the residential halls.

They demanded installation of CCTV cameras on both sides of every wing of the residential halls.The other demands are withdrawal of Sher-e-Bangla Hall Provost Muhammad Zafar Iqbal Khan by 5:00pm of October 11 for his failure to protect students, compensation to Abrar’s family and bearing their expenses for running legal battle in the murder case.However, the hall provost resigned yesterday amid the student protest.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED SO FAR?

Police have arrested 18 people so far in connection with the murder.Among them, key suspect Ifti Mosharraf Shakal confessed to beating up Abrar with other Chhatra League leaders.

Meftahul Islam Zion, who is one of the accused of Abrar Fahad murder case, confessed to a magistrate that he saw his accomplices were beating the victim inside a room of Sher-e-Bangla Hall.
