Shahed gets life in prison in arms case

Live Correspondent: A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced Regent Group and Regent Hospital Chairman Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim to life imprisonment in a case filed under the Arms Act. The pronounced the judgment with Shahed standing in the dock.

This is the first verdict against Shahed who faces over 50 cases filed after his arrest.

On September 16, Shahed pleaded innocent in the case filed. On August 27, a Dhaka court framed charges against Shahed in the case.

Shahed was arrested from a boat at Lobangapati near Sakor Bazar of Debhata border in Satkhira district on July 15 while trying to flee to India.

A firearm was also recovered from him and a case was filed with Debhata Police Station in this regard. Later, the case was shifted to the Dhaka court.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) conducted separate drives at the Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital and arrested eight people on charge of issuing fake coronavirus test reports in addition to charging the admitted Covid-19 patients exorbitant fees.

In further development, the head office of Regent Group along with the both hospitals was sealed off and 16 people, including the chairman, were sued on charge of issuing fake coronavirus test reports.
