Narayanganj Live : The police have filed a charge sheet against 11 people, including a local Awami League leader, for attacking two school teachers and their family members at Sonargaon in Narayanganj.

The two sibling school teachers of Mayadeep Primary School were attacked at Mayadeep Char in Sonargaon upazila on the night of January 22 by a group of assailants led by Bardi union’s Ward 6 Awami League unit secretary Hashem.

A case was filed with Sonargaon police station on the following day, said the police station’s sub-inspector Firoz Ahmed.

Firoz, also investigating officer of the case, said that he filed the charge sheet in the case in late January with the Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Court. The charge sheet named Hashem as an accused, he added.

School teacher Mariyam Akter Pakhi, her brother Rashed, her 15-month-old daughter and some other family members were injured in the attack.

Mariyam said that Hashem and some other people with political clout were angry with the school and had tried to stop the school activists since 2010 as they were involved in indiscriminate sand lifting which threatened the existence of the Mayadeep and Nunertek Chars.

The attack was carried out by Hashem, his associate Anwar, Mehedi, Shahjalal, Shah Paran, Foysal, Din Islam, Rakib, Rahim Ali, Ramjan and others, she said.

The school initiative was taken by poet Shahed Kayes. He said that they had carried out protest campaigns against the sand lifting for about 10 years and subsequently sand lifting was banned there.

The campaigns enraged sand-lifters and they started putting pressure and threats to shut down the school. The primary school has over 100 students who are mostly from fishermen families.

Civil societies and socio-cultural organisations of Narayanganj protested at the attack on school teachers by forming human chains and rallies.

An accused named Shah Paran was arrested by the police as the charge sheet was pressed against 11 people, said Shahed Kayes.
