Chattogram Live: A court in Chattogram has ordered police to arrest City Group chairman and managing director Fazlur Rahman in a case filed by Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam issued a arrest warrant against Fazlur Rahman after framing charges against him on Thursday (July 14) for marketing 'fortified' edible oil instead of adding appropriate level of Vitamin A.

At that time, neither Fazlur Rahman or any of his lawyer was present at the court.

The BSTI filed the case on October 20, 2019 after detecting less amount of Vitamin A in 'Teer' and 'Natural' brands of fortified edible oil.

A BSTI monitoring team collected samples from a factory of VOTT Oil Refinery Limited at North Patenga in Chattogram. Fazlur Rahman is the managing director of Messrs VOTT Oil Refinery Ltd. He is also the chairman and MD of City Group, a business conglomerate. Messrs VOTT Oil Refinery Company Ltd is a sister concern of City Group.

BSTI's lawyer Ashraf Uddin Khondker said tests were carried out after seizing some edible oils from there. But, the case was filed as the samples could not pass the tests. The court framed charges today and issued arrest warrant against the sole accused.

According to the designated standards of BSTI, each kilogram of fortified oil must have to have 15-30 miligrams of Vitamin 20. But only 3.16 milligrams of Vitamin A were found in 'Teer' brand of vegetables oil and 6.47milligrams oil was found in the samples of edible oil.
