Chhatra League-Chhatra Dalclash at DU, 32 injured

DU Live: Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) locked in clashes at Central Shaheed Minar area in the capital on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 32 injured. The crash happened on the campus at about 9:45 am. Both parties, who are the student wings of the ruling Awami League and opposition BNP, threw brickbats at each other. Later, police brought the situation under control and dispersed Chhatra Dal activists.

Witnesses said, Chhatra Dal led a march from the emergency department entrance of Dhaka Medical College at around 9.15 and moved towards the Dhaka University campus. Chhatra League activists blocked the procession when it reached Central Shaheed Minar.

It was learnt that a new committee of central JCD was formed recently and they held several processions and rallies on the Dhaka University campus. JCD’s central general secretary Saif Mahmud Juwel allegedly made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a programme held at the TSC of the university.
 
JCD men claimed that they were going to Dhaka University Journalists' Association's office in the morning to hold a press conference to give an explanation of the issue. Suddenly, some people equipped with sticks, attacked them when they reached at  Central Shaheed Minar area.
 
Both the feuding groups threw brickbats, and attack each with sticks to each other, leaving at least 30 injured. Later, police came to the spot and dispersed them. Of the injured, few were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
 
Chhatra Dal leaders and activists took positions inside Dhaka Medical College Hospital while BCL men at Shaheed Minar shortly after the clash.

Another chase and clash took place between the two groups at Doel Chattar around 11:30 am. The JCD activists were forced to leave the area around 12.00 noon after they faced a chase from BCL activists.
 
Meanwhile, DU BCL general secretary Saddam Hossain said it is a clash between two rival groups and slammed JCD general secretary's remarks on Prime Minister as derogatory.
