CoU Live: A Cumilla University student was arrested under the Information and Communication Technology Act on Sunday in connection with a Facebook post where he reportedly made defamatory remark about the religion Islam and the prophet, confirmed Kotwali model police station sub-inspector Imam Hasan.

Joy Dev Chandra Shill, a third year bachelor’s student of finance and banking department, allegedly made the remark on the verified Facebook page of Voice of America on Saturday.

He deleted it hours after posting it but a screenshot of the comment was already taken by some students and they shared that on the university Facebook group.

Joy Dev, however, apologised to the university community on the Facebook group for his acts.  A group of students on Sunday formed a human chain and started protest on the campus at about 12 noon and submitted an application to the vice-chancellor requesting him to punish and expel Joy Dev accusing him of hurting religious sentiment.

Vice-chancellor Emran Kabir Chowdhury said Joy Dev was temporarily expelled from the university and additional actions would follow an investigation.
