Former MP Awal remanded in extortion case

Live Correspondent: A Dhaka court granted a two-day remand to MA Awal, former MP from Laxmipur-1 constituency and chairman of the Islamic Democratic Party, in a case filed for extortion against him with the capital’s Pallabi police station.

Additional Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Hasibul Haque granted his remand after hearing.

Sub-inspector of Police Mohammad Selim, general registration officer of Pallabi police station, confirmed the matter and said that last month, Major Mostafa Kamal (retd) filed a case against MP Awal for extortion of Tk 20 lakh.

The investigating officer then requested to put him remand on five days in the case. The court issued arrest warrant and placed him on two days remand after hearing.

Earlier on Wednesday, after a four-day remand in a murder case, Awal was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

The investigating officer of the case, DB Police Inspector Syed Iftekhar Hossain, requested the court to keep him behind bar till the investigation of the case is completed.

Following the application, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Mahmuda Akhter ordered to send him to jail.Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Awal, the main accused and alleged mastermind behind the brutal murder of Shahin Uddin, from Bhairab area on May 20.

Shahin Uddin was brutally hacked to death in broad daylight on May 16, in front of his son after being called to resolve a land dispute. His mother Aklima Begum filed a case with Pallabi Police Station on May 17.
