Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman freed on bail

Live Correspondent: Bangla daily Prothom Alo journalist Shmsuzzaman Shams was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Monday evening, five days after he was detained from his Savar home. He was released from the jail after the authorities had received his bail order from the court, senior jail super Subhash Kumar Ghosh said,

Earlier in the afternoon, sn additional metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka granted bail for Shamsuzzaman Shams in a case filed with Ramna police station in Bangladesh capital Dhaka under Digital Security Act.

Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor of the court granted bail to Shamsuzzaman on Monday in the case filed under DSA over a recent report on price hike.

The court allowed the journalist’s bail until filing the police report in the case, Samsuzzaman’s lawyer Prasanta Kumar Karmaker said.

He said that the court granted the bail at Tk 20,000 bond.

'We are yet to get full order in our hand,' he said. The bail appeal was filed with the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Dhaka earlier on the day.

On March 30, Ramna police produced the journalist before the CMM court and appealed to keep him in jail while Samsuzzaman’s lawyer sought his bail that day.  The court on the day ordered to send him to jail.

On that day Samsuzzaman was taken to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj from the court. On the following day, Samsuzzaman was shifted to Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur. On April 1, he was again brought to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj .

Samsuzzaman has been made accused in two cases filed with Ramna police station and Tejgaon police station under the Digital Security Act. He was picked up around two hours after a case under the DSA was filed by an Awami Juba League leader with the Tejgaon police station at about 2:15am on the day.

His whereabouts were unknown until he was produced before a court at about 10:00am on the following day. The plainclothes people seized his two mobile phone sets, laptop, and a portable hard-disc.
